Ripe when you want it to be

In the Patera Magna, we store ripening, ethylene emitting fruit separately, so the ripening processess of different varieties don't accelerate each other. Great for your banana that has the tendency to turn brown right before your eyes.

But then there's that net of avocado's: stonehard when you want to use the first ones, and all past their prime a few days later.

Putting ethylene to good use

Here's where you can use ethylene to your advantage: store the avocado, mango, kiwi or pear that you want to eat first up top, underneath the bell jar, accompanied by an ethylene emitting fruit like a banana or apple.

The combination of ethylene, light and warmth will make that the fruits on top ripen faster than the ones you store in the dark underneath the lid.

Everything started with a wrinkled bell pepper: we always tried to be super conscious, but still ended up throwing out overripe fruits or vegetables way more often than we liked.

It sparked a research into how fruits and vegetables like to be stored, what the biological processes are around ripening and decay, and what we can learn from other cultures when it comes to our relationship with food.

What i'd like to know about the Patera Matura

What's that name about?

Patera Matura is Latin and literally means 'ripening bowl', so even though it might sound fancy, it simply explains what you are looking at.

(We made sure to check this with two classical scholars)

When and where can i buy the Patera Matura?

The Patera Matura can be ordered here on the webshop and are handmade. Expect a lead time of approximately 3-4 weeks.

Why are there holes in the bowl underneath

The holes are there so air can circulate while the stock is slowly ripening.

Where is the Patera Matura made?

Right now, the terra cotta parts are produced by Thomas here at the studio in Overasselt. 

The glass bell jar is made by a different company. We made sure the dish fits a standard size.

Why can't i buy the Patera Matura in a store?

You can't yet, but we're working on it!


Right now, it costs too much time and money to accomodate a store-percentage while still keeping the series affordable.

What if i break or lose a part of the Patera Matura?

We all know things like that can happen. And personally hate it when that means we have to buy a whole new set.

That is why it will be possible to re-order all different parts of the Patera Matura.
